Spring on the farm is always a whirlwind, and here at RK Cattle Co., it’s in full swing. From the first signs of new life in the pasture to the smell of freshly turned soil, this season is packed with energy, excitement, and a little bit of chaos!

Calving season is one of my favorite times of the year. There’s nothing like the joy of seeing healthy calves hit the ground and begin their first steps. Weston has been learning the ropes alongside me—checking on calves, assisting with heifers, and making sure everyone is healthy and thriving. Each calf has its own personality, and it’s always a reminder of how unique every animal is.

Meanwhile, Oaklynn has been loving the springtime on the farm too. She’s been helping with the younger animals, learning about farm routines, and even getting her hands a little dirty in the fields. It’s fun to see her take pride in all the little jobs that keep the farm running smoothly.

Our show heifers, Reba and Sniper, have been keeping Weston on his toes as they prepare for the upcoming shows. Reba is our easy-going, gentle girl who’s been fun to work with, while Sniper is already showing his spirited personality and teaching Weston patience and consistency. Working with them is a reminder that cattle training is about relationships as much as it is about technique.

Spring isn’t just about calves and shows—it’s also about the land waking up. Our pastures are green, and the wheatgrass is coming in beautifully. We’ve been letting the cattle graze the wheatgrass, giving them fresh, nutrient-rich forage that sets them up for a healthy season. Field work is in full swing, too, turning over soil, planting, and watching the first shoots of growth emerge. There’s something truly satisfying about seeing the land respond to your work and care.

Between calving, field work, wheatgrass grazing, and show prep, spring keeps us busy from sunrise to sunset. It’s messy, rewarding, and full of life—and it reminds me every day why I love this farm life. Every calf, every green shoot, and every small victory makes all the hard work worth it.

Here’s to a season of new life, growth, and learning—together as a family, on the farm we love.
